There are many venues available to sell personal property, but often it can be very confusing and burdensome not only deciding where to sell, but also whom to trust with your valuable property.

We will work with our clients to meet their needs, whether providing information to assist them with selling their property themselves, or handling all of the details for them. On our clients' behalf, we will manage the entire process, from estimates to removal and sale of a single item or an entire estate.

Restoration and Framing

In order to provide the highest quality restoration to our clients, Robyn Roderick Fine Art Appraisal Services employs painting, paper and object conservators with expertise in their field who belong to AIC (The American Institute of Conservation). They have all been professionally trained at the most prestigious schools of conservation.

In addition to restoration services, our certified picture framer has more than 30 years’ experience in conservation framing techniques.

Treasured heirlooms or damaged artwork will be professionally restored after fire, flood or accidental damage and returned to the insured’s home “like new” again.

Robyn Roderick Fine Art Appraisal Services has been helping clients sell their treasured fine art and antiques since 1987.

Robyn's professional relationships ensure maximum return for clients.

Robyn Roderick has more than 28 years of experience in sales of fine art and antiques. In addition to being a gallery owner and dealer early in her career, she has traveled across the country to exhibit and sell in prestigious art and antiques shows. She has developed strong working relationships with local, regional, national and international auction houses, galleries, scholars and high-end private collectors looking for that "special piece". She is also skilled in internet sales.

As an appraiser, Robyn Roderick can utilize her experience and knowledge to assist clients with not only the sale of their artwork, but also with the authentication ('vetting') process, in a discreet, timely and professional manner.

Robyn Roderick Fine Art Appraisal Services specializes in placing your treasured artwork in the most relevant market, assuring the highest financial returns for our clients. Sometimes, Robyn will recommend that an owner delay the sale of their property until the market improves.

Robyn will work with her clients to meet their needs, whether providing information to assist them with selling their property themselves, or handling all of the details for them. On her clients' behalf, she will manage the entire process, from estimates to removal and sale of a single item or an entire estate, from the initial on-site inspection and consultation to delivering all proceeds to our client. Robyn Roderick's primary goal is to ensure that her clients achieve the maximum possible financial return for their property.

Robyn Roderick Fine Art Appraisal Services meets the IRS standards for a 'qualified appraiser'

When a client wants to make a non-cash charitable contribution that can be used as an income tax deduction, the IRS requires the deductible value to be determined by a qualified appraiser. With more than 25 years experience in conducting appraisals of fine art for donation to museums and other public institutions, and with continuing accreditation through the American Society of Appraisers, Robyn Roderick meets the IRS standard for a qualified appraiser. Robyn keeps current on IRS rules and requirements through continuing education seminars at which IRS representatives present current guidelines. She also adheres to the required Uniform Standards of the Professional Appraisal Practice. An appraiser can be held liable if she does not practice due diligence and adhere to IRS guidelines.

Fair market value is used for this type of appraisal. Fair market value is defined as "the price of exchange between a willing buyer and a willing seller, neither being compelled to buy or sell, and both having reasonable knowledge of relevant facts." It is up to the appraiser to identify the most relevant markets in order to determine appropriate fair market value. For the majority of personal property appraisals, the appraiser uses the sales comparison approach. By this means the appraiser concludes an opinion of the value for the property by comparing it with similar items that have been sold or are for sale in the relevant marketplaces. The appraiser will make adjustments to prices based on marketplace conditions and the properties' characteristics.

Robyn Roderick not only prepares IRS compliant appraisal documents, she also ensures that her clients know the necessary paperwork to accompany their tax returns, and includes signed copies when required. Tax payers must complete and attach to their tax returns IRS Form 8283 according to the nature and value of the donated property.

INSURANCE CLAIMS

Insurance companies rely on the expertise and professionalism of Robyn Roderick Fine Art Appraisal Services for settling insured’s disaster claims: fire, flood, accidental damage and more. Our company provides everything necessary to quickly and efficiently make the insured whole after a loss. RRFAAS will perform on-site examination of property and assessment of damage, then prepare a detailed repair/restoration estimate. Or, if property suffered a loss-in-value or is a total loss, Robyn Roderick, certified appraiser, is qualified to perform an appraisal report written in compliance with the Uniform Standards of the Professional Appraisal Practice and the American Society of Appraiser’s Code of Ethics.

Since the items involved in most insurance appraisals are either one of a kind or were produced in very limited quantity, additional consideration must be given for the replacement as to artistic merit, desirability, characteristics and period of execution.

In addition to providing estimates and replacement value reports, RRFAAS also provides transport services to our secure location in Swarthmore, storage and professional restoration services.

INSURANCE SCHEDULING

Although not all insurance companies require a documented inventory of belongings to process a claim, they do recommend it. Without a detailed inventory, your claim will probably take longer and your benefit will be smaller. You are most likely underinsured, and you will not realize it until it is too late. An inventory may help you determine what coverage you actually need. It is easier to do now than by memory after a catastrophe. Robyn Roderick, certified fine art appraiser since 1993, will perform an on-site examination and inventory right in your home, perform market research in relevant venues, and prepare an appraisal document for replacement value purposes for the intended use of insurance coverage. Appraisal reviews are suggested every 3-5 years, to reflect current market conditions.

Estate Planning, Federal and State Taxes

ROBYN RODERICK FINE ART APPRAISAL SERVICES HAS ALL THE NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS TO PROVIDE FAIR MARKET VALUE FOR FINE ART PIECES AND ANTIQUES THAT COMPRISE PART OF AN ESTATE.

Federal Estate Tax Appraisals

The federal estate tax comes into play when someone dies and leaves their assets to someone other than a surviving spouse; a qualified charity; or a federal, state or local government. Thus any assets left to children, siblings, friends or even parents are subject to the federal estate tax. If the estate is sufficiently large, the tax applies to its fair market value. Fair market value is defined as "the price at which property would change hands between a willing buyer and a willing seller, neither being under any compulsion to buy or to sell and both having knowledge of relevant facts."

It is up to a qualified appraiser to identify the most relevant markets for a particular item in order to determine fair market value. For the majority of personal property appraisals, the appraiser concludes an opinion of the value for the property by comparing it with similar items that have been sold or are for sale in the relevant marketplaces. The appraiser will make adjustments to prices based on marketplace conditions and the properties' characteristics.

Estates and Trusts and State Law

Estates and trusts - broadly speaking, what happen's to people's property when they die - are a state law issue, and the rules vary (sometimes greatly) from state to state. There are two basic types of state taxes that might be levied against an estate: the state inheritance tax, and the state estate tax. The appraiser uses fair market value in concluding the value of personal property for both the state inheritance tax and for the state estate tax.

Several states - Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Tennessee as of 2012 - assess a state inheritance tax, based on the portion of a decendent's estate that is transferred to beneficiaries through a will or the intestate laws of succession. The beneficiaries are responsible for paying the taxes on the assets they inherit.

The state estate tax applies to the total value of the assets left by a decendent before it is distributed to individuals. Whereas heirs are responsible for paying inheritance taxes, the estate's executor or administrator pays the state estate tax from the estate itself. As of 2012, thirteen states levy a state estate tax: Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.

Restoration

Robyn Roderick Fine Art Appraisal Services offers expert restoration services for paintings, works on paper and decorative art objects. RRFAAS is a member of The American Institute of Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC), the only national organization in the US dedicated to the preservation of cultural material, and utilizes conservators who are active members of the organization. These professional conservators each specialize in a particular material and acquire intimate knowledge about each object they study and treat. Some of them have worked/trained at the Winterthur Museum in Delaware, one of the leading conservation programs in the country. Specialties at Winterthur include paintings, works on paper, textiles, objects (metals, ceramics, glass and organic materials), furniture, preservation housing, documentation, books and library materials. Conservation scientists in the Scientific Research and Analysis Lab at Winterthur have access to sophisticated instruments to study the composition, structure and authenticity of objects.

Robyn Roderick Fine Art Appraisal Services will provide an evaluation of your treasured artwork in Robyn's shop in Swarthmore, or on site in your home or business.

Treasured heirlooms or damaged artwork will be professionally restored after fire, flood or accidental damage and packaged for delivery to the insured’s home or business “like new” again.
